COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has instructed all police stations island-wide to provide necessary security for fuel stations.
Police confirmed that security measures have already been implemented across all locations where fuel distribution centers are located.
Meanwhile, Police say that the public is stocking up on fuel unnecessarily due to the volatile situation in the Middle East.
However, authorities reiterated that CPC has assured that sufficient oil reserves are available in the country and urged the public not to panic purchase stocks.
Authorities noted that certain groups are organized in collecting fuel in containers and all police stations have been advised to coordinate with fuel station managements to halt the issuance of fuel into gallons, bottles, or other containers until further notice.
Fuel will still be issued into containers for essential purposes, including:
Fishing vessels
Factories and construction sites
Agricultural activities
Specific household requirements
Police will take strict legal action against individuals or groups involved in: Hoarding fuel to sell at inflated prices,and Spreading false information or rumors regarding fuel via social media platforms.
