49 Inmates Get a Fresh Start This Independence Day!

COLOMBO (News 1st); A total of 49 prison inmates are set to receive a special Presidential pardon in view of the 78th National Independence Day tomorrow.

This decision has been taken under the powers vested in the President in accordance with Article 34 of the Constitution.

Accordingly, inmates currently serving jail sentences will receive a one-week remission for each year of their sentence already served.

Prisons Commissioner and Media Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake stated that the remaining portion of the sentences of inmates imprisoned due to failure to pay fines below Rs. 75,000 will also be cancelled.
