COLOMBO (News 1st): The Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority has announced that 99% of the irrigation systems damaged by recent disasters have been restored.

The Director General of the Authority, H.M.J.K. Herath, says that a specialized methodology is being implemented to reconstruct the damaged embankments of small tanks under the Mahaweli Authority.

Further, The Mahaweli Authority has decided to install special sluice gates at locations where tank embankments breached or overflowed during the disasters.

The objective of these new sluice gates is to protect the tank embankments and prevent them from collapsing during rises in water levels.

The Director General further noted that the tank embankments have already been repaired temporarily to ensure water can be successfully collected for the upcoming Maha season.
