Police Constable Arrested Following Altercation with NPP MP

COLOMBO (News 1st): The police constable from the Suriyakanda Police, who was involved in an altercation with National People’s Power (NPP), Ratnapura District Member of Parliament Shantha Padma Kumara, has been arrested.

Police says that the arrest was made on charges of wrongful restraint and criminal force.

MP Shantha Padma Kumara had lodged a complaint with the Kolonna Police, alleging that a constable from the Suriyakanda Police had attempted to assault him.

The Member of Parliament complained that while he was traveling from Kalugala to Halwinna, the police officer in question blocked the road with his motorcycle, forced the MP's cab to stop, and attempted to attack him.

Meanwhile, the police constable involved had also lodged a complaint, alleging that MP Shantha Padma Kumara and a group of individuals had assaulted him and forcibly taken away his motorcycle.

The constable's motorcycle was subsequently taken into police custody after it was found abandoned on the road near the Kalugala Temple.

According to police further investigations into the incident are underway.
