COLOMBO (News 1st); Minister and Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced that Sri Lanka will upgrade its meteorological facilities by installing a state-of-the-art Doppler radar system.
Speaking at the Cabinet media briefing, Dr. Jayatissa revealed that the first radar will be operational by 2027, marking a major leap in the country’s ability to predict severe weather events.
“We are working to further strengthen the Department of Meteorology by providing additional essential equipment,” he said.
The Minister also disclosed plans to acquire a second Doppler radar with assistance from the Government of Japan. “Having two radars will allow us to report weather information more accurately,” he emphasized.
Dr. Jayatissa stressed that this initiative goes beyond forecasting. “This is not only about predicting the weather—it is about saving lives during major natural disasters. We are committed to ensuring that the state mechanism operates swiftly and more effectively in evacuation processes during such emergencies.”
