COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Meteorology announced that the Northeast monsoon conditions are gradually setting in across the island, bringing widespread rainfall and occasional thunderstorms. According to the forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely in some areas of the Northern and Eastern provinces and in the Polonnaruwa district. Other parts of the island can expect showers or thundershowers after 1:00 p.m., with some locations experiencing fairly heavy falls above 50 mm. Misty conditions are expected in the early morning hours in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces. The Met Department has urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
