COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Meteorology has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka following a 6.3 magnitude earthquake near Indonesia’s Sumatra island, close to Aceh province, earlier today (27 November).
The quake, which struck at 10:26 AM local time, was 10 km deep and has no tsunami potential, according to Indonesia’s geophysics agency. Sri Lanka’s National Tsunami Early Warning Center issued an official notification declaring all coastal areas safe.
“There is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present with the effect of the above earthquake. Coastal areas are declared safe,” the bulletin states, adding that the advisory was issued in consultation with national and international agencies.
