COLOMBO (News1st); The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has dismissed two fundamental rights petitions challenging the government’s agreement with India to implement a Digital Identity Card project for Sri Lankan citizens.

The petitions, filed by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and another party, sought a ruling to invalidate the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Sri Lankan and Indian governments.

The case was heard today before a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena.

The Deputy Solicitor General raised preliminary objections, stating that the petitions could not be moved forward.

After considering the submissions, the bench accepted the objections and ruled that the petitions would be dismissed without further hearing.
