COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan authorities have launched a special underwater operation at the Weheragala Reservoir in Kataragama, following the discovery of a large cache of military-grade weapon components.
According to police sources, the operation involves six elite diving teams from the Sri Lanka Navy, deployed to conduct a thorough search of the reservoir’s interior.
The decision to initiate the operation was made after recent search missions uncovered a significant stockpile of empty magazines and weapon accessories submerged in the area.
Over the past two days, police recovered:
215 empty T-56 magazines
38 LMG drum magazines
11 MPMG 200 magazines
9 MPMG 100 magazines
6 T-81 magazines
One 100-round drum magazine used in 12.7mm anti-aircraft weapons
The discovery was made based on intelligence provided by a military officer, which led to coordinated search efforts in the reservoir vicinity.
Police confirmed that the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court will be briefed on the developments.
