COLOMBO (News 1st); A major breakthrough in Sri Lanka’s fight against narcotics was achieved when a suspect was arrested along with a vessel believed to have transported a massive drug consignment into the country.
The arrest was made during a joint operation by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Police Narcotics Bureau off the coast of Dondra Head.
The operation follows the discovery of 705.170 kilograms of illicit drugs—284.410 kg of heroin and 420.760 kg of methamphetamine (Ice)—on September 22 in Tangalle’s Seenimodara and Godawella areas.
The estimated street value of the haul is approximately Rs. 10 billion, making it one of the largest drug seizures in recent history.
The narcotics were found in a house where two individuals were discovered dead, and a third person, who was hospitalized, later succumbed to injuries.
Investigations suggest the drugs were smuggled into Sri Lanka via sea routes, possibly originating from Iran or Afghanistan, and were intended for distribution along the southern coast.
Police investigations have revealed that the consignment is allegedly linked to 'Unakuruwe Shantha', a suspected organized crime figure currently residing in Dubai.
Intelligence reports indicate that Shantha may be orchestrating drug trafficking operations targeting Sri Lanka’s southern region.
So far, six suspects have been arrested and remanded in connection with the case.
Authorities are continuing to trace the network and identify further links to international drug syndicates.
