COLOMBO (News 1st) - Lawyers of the National People's Power ' convened a media briefing today.
At the conference, they responded to the allegations leveled by the opposition regarding the arrest and remand of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
President's Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma said, the law applies equally to everyone, including the President, MPs, and state officials, and that bail should not be granted for crimes over Rs. 25,000 unless special circumstances exist. He criticized the opposition for portraying the court’s decision as politically motivated and emphasized the government’s commitment to ending corruption.
Attorney Akalanka Ukwatta condemned politicians for politicizing the court order and questioned the opposition’s selective public outrage.
Citing the official B report, he stated that no diplomatic or media-related activities took place during the visit and that the alleged expenses were exaggerated.
Attorney Hemaka Senanayake warned against personal attacks on the magistrate and urged respect for judicial processes.
Attorney Jayantha Dehiattage noted there is no public unrest over the former president’s arrest and that the law is now applied equally to rulers and citizens.
