COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Minister of Environment, Dr. Dammika Patabendige, has raised serious concerns over a possible organized effort behind recent shootings of wild elephants, calling for an immediate investigation into the incidents.
Speaking at a media briefing, the Minister revealed that nine elephants have sustained gunshot injuries in recent weeks, sparking fears of coordinated attacks on the country’s protected wildlife.
He stated that a formal complaint will be lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to determine whether these acts are being carried out by organized groups.
Veterinary teams have already begun treatment for the injured elephants, and wildlife authorities are closely monitoring their recovery.
The Minister also confirmed that he has instructed the Director General of Wildlife Conservation to enforce the law strictly against illegal hunting and wildlife crimes within protected zones.
In a tragic development, one of the wounded elephants, Bhathiya, succumbed to his injuries (15) while receiving treatment. A post-mortem examination was conducted later in the day to determine the exact cause of death.
Sri Lanka, home to a significant population of Asian elephants, has long struggled with human-elephant conflict and poaching — but this latest series of attacks suggests a more sinister threat.
