COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka is set to revolutionize its traffic fine payment system with the nationwide rollout of digital spot fine payments through the GovPAY platform starting this September, according to the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA).
The announcement was made during a media briefing in Colombo, where ICTA Board Member Harsha Purasinghe confirmed that Cabinet approval has been secured for the full-scale implementation. The initiative, which began as a pilot project in Kurunegala and Anuradhapura in April, is now ready to expand across the country.
The first phase of the rollout will begin in late July, covering police stations in the Western and Southern Provinces. By September, the system is expected to be operational at all police stations islandwide, enabling motorists to pay traffic fines instantly using their preferred banking apps or digital platforms.
Purasinghe noted that while app readiness was a challenge during the pilot phase, significant progress has been made. Most major banking apps have now integrated GovPAY, allowing users to choose their preferred bank or app to complete payments seamlessly.
