Doctor in Alleged Overpricing Scandal Barred from Hospital Grounds

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali Jayatunga today (15) ordered to release on bail of Dr. Maheshi Wijerathna, a specialist attached to the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, who had been in remand custody since June 17 over allegations of selling surgical equipment at inflated prices through a third party.

The court granted bail under a cash bond of Rs. 50,000 and two personal sureties of Rs. 5 million each.

As part of the bail conditions, the magistrate imposed a foreign travel ban on the suspect and issued an order prohibiting her from entering the premises of Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital during the ongoing investigation.

The bail order followed a submission made by President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris, who appeared on behalf of the suspect and requested her release.

The case has been scheduled to be taken up again on October 28.
