COLOMBO (News 1st); A major revelation has emerged from an ongoing investigation by Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), uncovering that 247 prisoners were released from custody without the required approval from the President.

The releases reportedly occurred during three major national celebrations — Christmas, Independence Day, and Vesak — raising serious concerns about procedural violations and abuse of authority within the prison system.

According to police sources, during the period between the release dates and the dates on which documents were submitted for presidential approval, prison officials have prematurely freed inmates, claiming that the conditions for a presidential pardon would be met, even before formal approval was granted.

Even more alarming is the discovery that 30 of the released inmates were not listed in any official documentation, suggesting a complete bypass of legal protocols.

These individuals were freed from nine different prisons across the country.

The CID has confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway to identify the individuals involved in authorizing these releases and to determine the identities of all 247 inmates.
