COLOMBO (News 1st); The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed a case before the Colombo High Court against former Minister of Labour and Public Relations, Mervyn Silva, over allegations of amassing assets far exceeding his declared lawful income.
The case filed against Former Minister Mervyn Silva, filed under Section 23(A)(1) of the Bribery Act, include two serious indictments.
The Commission alleges that during his tenure as Minister—from March 31, 2010, to March 31, 2012—Silva acquired luxury vehicles, real estate, and maintained numerous bank accounts using funds that could not be accounted for through his official salary.
Silva allegedly used Rs. 13.9 million to purchase land in Kadawatha through 48 bank accounts held across state and private banks.
He is also accused of spending Rs. 71.3 million to acquire a high-value property on Ernest de Silva Mawatha, Colombo 07.
Additionally, Rs. 32.375 million was reportedly spent on a luxury vehicle for his son, Malaka Silva.
The Commission further claims that over Rs. 5.5 million was spent on another vehicle, and Rs. 8.85 million on a Defender SUV.
