COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Navy, in collaboration with the State Intelligence Service and Police Narcotics Bureau, seized approximately 778 kilograms of heroin and crystal methamphetamine (Ice) from two multi-day fishing vessels operating in the southern deep seas.

The vessels, Jayarusith and Nirosh 4, had reportedly departed on May 6 and May 14, respectively, under the guise of fishing missions.

Acting on credible intelligence and with international support, authorities intercepted the boats and escorted them to the Dikovita Fisheries Harbour early Wednesday (28) morning.

The seized narcotics—275kg of heroin and 503kg of Ice—were concealed in specially modified compartments, including a chain system designed for underwater deployment and satellite phone connectivity, according to Navy officials.

11 suspects, all residents of the Devinuwara area, were taken into custody following on-site inspections and confessions.

The Police Narcotics Bureau confirmed that field tests identified heroin, Ice, and morphine among the seized substances.

The suspects were formally arrested after being informed of their charges under Sri Lanka’s narcotics laws.
