COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's National People's Power has emerged as the dominant force in the 2025 local government elections, securing nearly 44% of the total vote so far, and winning 3,294 seats across the country.
The results mark a dramatic shift in voter sentiment, with the JJB more than doubling the seat count of its nearest rival, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), which garnered 21.3% of the vote so far, and 1,418 seats.
The once-dominant Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) suffered a significant setback, managing less than 10% of the vote and 619 seats.
The ITAK, with around 3.01% of the vote and 330 seats, maintained its influence in Tamil-majority regions, while the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Democratic Tamil National Alliance, and the All Ceylon Makkal Congress also made minor inroads.
