COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that he wrote to the President of the United States, expressing the country's readiness to present facts and negotiate changes to the recently imposed tariffs.

"Today, we were informed that this letter has reached the White House," said the President on Tuesday (8) evening.

He highlighted the potential economic risks posed by recent tariff decisions made by the United States. While the immediate effects have yet to be felt, the President emphasized the urgency of addressing these challenges to safeguard Sri Lanka's economy.

"We are at risk," President Dissanayake stated, acknowledging the looming threat. "We are trying to hold discussions and secure concessions."

The President also mentioned ongoing discussions about sending a delegation to the United States to negotiate an agreement. He stressed the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the impact of foreign tax policies on Sri Lanka's economy.

"Any country can make decisions about their tax policies. So what can we do? Firstly, we must discuss the steps we can take to mitigate the effects of these policies. Secondly, we need to prepare our nation to face any situation. If our economy collapses due to another country's tax policies, it indicates that our economy is not in a good state."

President Dissanayake assured the public that extensive discussions are underway to create a resilient economy capable of withstanding such external pressures. "We are attempting to resolve these matters in a manner that has the least negative impact on our economy," he concluded.
