Parliament to Decide Fate of Embattled Police Chief

COLOMBO (News 1st): A proposal to appoint an investigation committee for the removal of Police Chief Deshabandu Tennakoon is set to be presented to Parliament. The proposal is scheduled to be introduced at 5:30 PM.

Parliament is expected to convene at 9:30 AM under the leadership of Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.

Additionally, the second reading debate on the bill concerning property derived from criminal activities or the "Proceeds of Crime Bill" will take place this afternoon.

Furthermore, a regulation under the Criminal Procedure Code (Special Provisions) Act is also slated for parliamentary approval.

Currently, Police Chief Deshabandu Tennakoon is held in remand custody at Dumbara Prison.

He was recently arrested in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on December 31, 2023, in front of a hotel in Matara, Weligama, which resulted in the death of a police sergeant from the Colombo Crime Division and injuries to another police officer.
