Sri Lankan Territory Will Never Undermine India; Seeks Support on Continental Shelf Claim

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as reiterated that Sri Lanka's foreign policy is firmly guided by national interests, with a focus on promoting peace and respecting the sovereignty of all nations. These principles, he noted, form the foundation of Sri Lanka's diplomatic roadmap.

At a joint press meet on Saturday, 5th April 2025, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake highlighted the deep historical, religious, and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and India, which span over two thousand five hundred years. He emphasized that these connections go beyond mere geographical proximity, reflecting a profound bond between the two nations.

He praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and transformative initiatives, which have elevated India to the global stage. The President acknowledged the immense benefits Sri Lanka has received in economic reforms, infrastructure development, and social empowerment due to Modi's personal friendship and unwavering support.

During the press meet, President Dissanayake briefed Prime Minister Modi on the success of Sri Lanka's debt restructuring programme and the country's progressing economic stability. He expressed deep gratitude for India's support throughout the debt restructuring process.

The leaders discussed enhancing defence cooperation, with President Dissanayake reaffirming Sri Lanka's commitment to ensuring its territory is not used to undermine India's security or regional stability. He also requested Prime Minister Modi's intervention to initiate bilateral technical discussions regarding Sri Lanka's claim to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.

Recognizing the importance of a digital economy, President Dissanayake thanked India for its financial contribution of INR 300 million towards the Sri Lanka Digital Identity (SLUDI) project. He highlighted the potential for cooperation in digitalization across key areas.

The partnership between Sri Lanka and India was acknowledged as crucial for strengthening economic and people-to-people ties. President Dissanayake extended his thanks to Prime Minister Modi for converting a US$ 14.9 million line of credit into a grant for the installation of a signalling system on the Maho-Anuradhapura railway line.

The leaders also discussed expediting the conclusion of a social security agreement to benefit expatriate workers and addressing the fisheries issue, calling for decisive measures to halt bottom trawling and illegal fishing practices.

President Dissanayake emphasized India's support during Sri Lanka's recent economic crisis, noting that India's partnership played a crucial role in Sri Lanka's resilience. He called for a cooperative approach to development, innovation, security, stability, and peace in the Indian Ocean region.

In conclusion, President Dissanayake commended Prime Minister Modi's vision of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" (Together with all, development for all), recognizing it as a timely and pragmatic approach to fostering a common path forward for both nations.
