COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Member of Parliament Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka expressing his views on the upcoming local government elections, stated that the current government is likely to retain power due to the lack of viable alternatives for the people.
Fonseka noted, "In this election, even those who worked with me are contesting from various parties. I have given them the freedom to make their own decisions at this time. I believe the people will once again support the current government in this election. There are no other alternatives for the people. The public will not support fragmented parties. Therefore, I think the government that has taken responsibility and moved forward will continue. The people will have to work this government in this election and try to work with it."
When asked about the leadership of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Fonseka commented, "The SJB is falling apart and will continue to do so. Many are disheartened. I resigned due to the leader's actions and the weaknesses in his leadership. Not only me, but many prominent members like Patali, Rajitha, and Welgama have started leaving the party. Even Imthiaz, who took over the chairmanship after me, has left. There is no future for the party with that leader. Those who still trust him will not have a successful political career in the future."
