COLOMBO (News 1st) - The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has announced plans to modernize the 330 automatated rain gauges currently installed across the island.
Senior Geologist at the Landslide Studies Division, Dr. Gamini Jayatissa, said that several measures have been taken to enhance methods for identifying risk situations faced by the public during heavy rainfall.
He said that currently, there exists a mechanism to measure rainfall to a particular region in realtime by utilizing these automated rain gauges, and issue landslide early warnings if required.
He went on to note that plans are in place to increase this number of rain gauges to 480, and that this would make the process of issuing early warnings more efficient and increase accuracy of data gathered as well.
