COLOMBO (News 1st): India reiterated its unwavering support for Sri Lanka, citing instances where India has acted as a first responder during natural disasters, maritime mishaps, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the recent economic crisis.

The Indian Republic Day celebrations took place in Colombo and among those present were Former President's Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Ministers from the Government and Members of Parliament.

"India has time and again demonstrated that it is a dependable partner and a reliable friend for Sri Lanka. Our support has been timely, quick, and unconditional," affirmed Dr. Satyanjal Pandey, Acting Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka on Sunday (26).

He underscored the geographical proximity that makes the two nations natural partners, necessitating mutual sensitivity and support free from external influences.

As the co-chair of the Official Creditors Committee, India remains actively involved in Sri Lanka's financial stabilization efforts through its engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Dr. Pandey announced that India has converted $100 million worth of development debt assistance into grants, bringing India's total grant assistance to Sri Lanka to nearly USD 780 million.

India's development assistance projects span all 25 districts of Sri Lanka, with completed projects amounting to $390 million, ongoing projects approximately $201 million, and committed grant projects in the pipeline nearing USD 180 million.

Dr. Pandey highlighted a strategic shift from debt-driven models to investment-led partnerships across various sectors as Sri Lanka transitions from economic recovery to growth.

Key energy projects include establishing electricity grid connectivity and multiproduct petroleum pipelines between the two nations. Following the successful launch of the Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai ferry service, plans are underway to initiate a ferry service between Rameshwaram and Talaimannar.

He also noted the emergence of Indigo as the largest foreign carrier in Sri Lanka and the collaborative efforts to implement the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Entry (SLUDI) project, which aims to enhance digital connectivity and unlock the benefits of the digital stack for the Sri Lankan populace.
