COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka is steadfast in maintaining its neutrality and contributing actively to regional peace and stability, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath.

Speaking at the 26th ASEAN Regional Forum, Heads of Defence Universities, Colleges and Institutions, Minister Herath emphasized the importance of neutrality for small states like Sri Lanka, which is strategically located in the Indian Ocean region.

"We do not wish to be drawn into conflict or be compelled to choose sides. Respect for sovereignty and the rule of law that govern interactions between states are integral for the survival of small states, such as Sri Lanka, in an increasingly polarized world," Minister Herath stated.

He highlighted that Sri Lanka's survival and development are intrinsically linked to a stable regional and global environment.

Minister Herath addressed the challenges posed by the current global environment, including increasing major power rivalry, militarization in the Asia-Pacific region, and threats to the rules-based multilateral order. He noted that selective decoupling and protectionist measures are impacting global supply chains and widening global inequality.

On the security front, Minister Herath pointed to the resurgence of conflicts involving major powers and the rise of multilateral alliances with economic and security interests in the Asia-Pacific region. He also expressed concern over the threat of nuclear weapons and the growing influence of cyber operations and strategic communications.

"The global landscape is increasingly shaped by cyber operations, strategic communications, and digital engagement. States must adapt not only their military strategies but also their approach to governance, regional cooperation, and global engagement," he said. Minister Herath called for innovative approaches to diplomacy, crisis management, and peacekeeping to keep dialogue and conversation channels open.
