Former Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Wife Arrested Over Misuse of Rs. 6.1 Million

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and his wife were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) last night.

Police Media Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police Buddhika Manatunga, stated that the arrest was made in connection with allegations of misappropriating Rs. 6.1 million in 2014.

According to the Police Media Spokesperson, the couple was arrested in connection with the misuse of funds intended for flood relief efforts in Bingiriya and Narammala. 

The funds, amounting to Rs. 
6,146,110 were instead used for election campaign activities during the 2015 Presidential Election. 

This has been classified as criminal misuse of public funds. 

The Police media spokesperson added that following an investigation and advice from the Attorney General, the arrests were made.

The CID investigation is ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today.
