COLOMBO (News 1st): Former Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, his wife, and two other suspects have been released on bail in connection with a financial fraud case.

The order was issued today by Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela after the suspects were presented in court.

The suspects were granted bail on two surety bonds of Rs. 2.5 million each.

They were arrested last night by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over allegations of misappropriating Rs. 6.1 million in 2014.

The CID revealed that the funds, obtained from the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation under the pretense of providing flood relief to displaced individuals in the Bingiriya and Narammala areas, were allegedly diverted for the 2015 presidential election campaign.

The fund amount to Rs. 6,146,110/-.

The arrests were made following instructions from the Attorney General, based on charges of criminal misappropriation of public funds and violations of the Public Properties Act.
