COLOMBO (News 1st); The Acting Inspector General of Police has issued specific directives to officers on motor traffic duty on procedures for stopping vehicles at night.
Officers are required to wear high-visibility jackets and reflective gloves to ensure they are clearly visible to drivers in low-light conditions.
The officers have also been instructed to use red flashlights, which are already issued to police stations, to stop vehicles.
The Acting IGP has also directed that police inspectors, OICs, and traffic OICs regularly supervise and ensure that officers on night duty are adhering to the outlined guidelines.
The police noted that traffic officers often use various types of flashlights when signaling vehicles to stop at night, which can result in the flashlight beam shining directly into drivers' eyes. This makes it difficult for drivers to control or maneuver their vehicles safely.
This decision was made in response to concerns about the heightened risk of accidents and the increased danger to officers due to the lack of reflective jackets.
