Local Government Elections to be held in early 2025

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed that the local government elections will be held in early 2025. 

He explained that although the Supreme Court has ruled that the elections should be held soon, they were delayed due to issues such as candidate deaths, departures, and changes in political affiliations.

Minister Herath emphasized that the government is ready to conduct the elections for Pradeshiya Sabhas and Urban Councils and is considering amending the Local Government Election Act and consulting other parties in Parliament before proceeding.

While the dates are not finalized, he assured that the elections are planned for early 2025.
