COLOMBO (News 1st); The Cabinet has granted approval to designate the Eastern Container Terminal (ECT) project as a "Special Project."

This decision was made based on a proposal by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) will develop the ECT in phases as part of the Colombo South Port project, operating it as a fully-owned terminal of the SLPA.

The Cabinet's approval was obtained during today's meeting.

The contract for the civil works has already been awarded, and construction activities are currently underway.

Speaking at a media briefing, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the procurement process for the necessary cranes for the terminal has also been completed.

Furthermore, the Minister noted that private terminal operators and service providers at the Colombo Port will receive various tax incentives under the Strategic Development Act and the Board of Investment (BOI) law.
