UN to Assist Sri Lanka in Debt Restructuring Efforts

COLOMBO (News 1st); The UN expressed support for Sri Lanka’s IMF program and poverty eradication, while pledging assistance to promote national peace among communities.

The United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Marc-André Franche, met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake (03) at the Presidential Secretariat. 

During the meeting, Marc-André Franche conveyed warm greetings from UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the newly elected president.

The UN Resident Coordinator praised the President’s manifesto, particularly highlighting the ethical conduct of his political campaign.

He acknowledged the challenges the government faces as public expectations rise, yet assured the UN’s support in Sri Lanka’s poverty eradication efforts and its engagement with the IMF programme.

A key focus of the discussion was President Dissanayake’s anti-corruption initiative, a central component of his manifesto. 

Franche noted that this initiative provides hope for a new beginning in Sri Lanka.
