COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government have decided to consult the Attorney General regarding the measures to be taken for the nominations of the local government elections.

State Minister Janaka Wakkambura highlighted that the postponement of the local government polls announced in 2022 has led to numerous issues with the submitted nomination papers.

Wakkambura pointed out that if the elections proceed with the current nominations, over 900,000 voters will be disenfranchised.

Additionally, he noted that another group of individuals who have recently turned 18 will miss the opportunity to stand as election candidates.

The Election Commission has announced plans to make necessary arrangements to hold the local government elections as soon as possible, in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling.
