COLOMBO (News 1st); The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) of Sri Lanka has issued a public notice warning taxpayers about fraudulent activities involving individuals posing as tax collectors.

The notice emphasizes that the recovery of outstanding taxes is carried out legally and only through written notifications from the Commissioner General of Inland Revenue.

The IRD has received reports of individuals visiting businesses and collecting money under the guise of Inland Revenue Officers.

The department clarified that it does not accept responsibility for any money collected in this manner and has lodged a complaint with the Sri Lanka Police to take legal action against such fraudulent activities.

Taxpayers are advised to refrain from giving money to anyone claiming to collect taxes in person. Instead, they are encouraged to visit the nearest regional office or the head office of the Inland Revenue Department to resolve any issues related to tax payments.
