Election Commission informs governors to cancel illegal appointments

COLOMBO (News1st); The Election Commission has informed all provincial governors in writing to cancel illegal appointments.

The Election Commission said despite the postponement of the local government election, the local government election law remains in effect. 

It added that during this period, it is crucial to refrain from promoting any political party, candidate, or group.

However, election monitors have submitted complaints stating that some provincial governors have appointed former local government representatives and candidates who have submitted nominations for the local government elections to oversee development activities at local government institutions.

Accordingly, the Election Commission said it informed the provincial governors to cancel the appointments and to refrain from making further appointments.

The Election Commission said the President's Secretary was also informed in writing in this regard.

The Election Commission further said provincial chief secretaries and local government commissioners were informed in writing to immediately stop the misuse of state resources at the local government institutions.
