Water levels of Nilwala, Gin and Kalu rivers rise

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Irrigation said the water levels of the Nilwala, Gin and Kalu rivers is increasing due to the prevailing showers.

Director (Hydrology & Disaster Management) - Dept. of Irrigation Eng. S.P.C Sugeeshwara said people on either sides of the rivers should remain vigilant.

A heavy fog has been reported along the western slopes of the central hills, with the rain.

The Department of Meteorology says the prevailing showery condition in south-western part of the island is expected to continue further.

The Department predicts showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. 

Fairly heavy showers above 50mm can be expected at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Puttalam districts.

The Met. Department predicts a few showers will occur in the Northern province and in the Anuradhapura district.

Fairly strong winds about (40-45) kmph can be expected at times in western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the evening or night.

The landslide warning issued for several divisional secretariats in the Kalutara, Kandy, Matara, Ratnapura, Galle, Hambantota and Kegalle districts has been extended till Friday (29) afternoon.
