Police K9 unit tracks down suspect who clubbed brother to death

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A Sri Lanka Police K9 unit named 'Shaggy' tracked down a suspect responsible for killing a man with a club.

According to a statement from the Office of the Police Spokesperson, a woman had filed a complaint with the Divulapelessa Police on Monday (5) citing that her husband who had left home the previous day to herd cattle had not returned.

A search carried out with the assistance of the locals led to the discovery of the 44-year-old man's body inside a jungle in the Dikpitiya area on Monday (5) morning.

Investigations revealed that the man was killed with a club and a stone that was located at the crime scene.

Accordingly, the police K9 Unit of the Hasalaka Police was called in with its handler Constable Seneviratne.

The K9 unit, based on the scent it picked up at the crime scene, had proceeded to a house located close to the scene and moved to the well located at the rear of the house, leading to the discovery of several washed clothes.

Accordingly, Police arrested the 46-year-old homeowner for the murder, and it was revealed that the suspect was the brother of the deceased.

Police said that the brothers were in a long-standing dispute over a paddy field, and the murder may have been the result of this dispute.
