COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Elections Commission of Sri Lanka will be entitled to call for a local government election after coming Tuesday, the 20th of September.
The Elections Commission will be such entitled according to the provisions of the Local Government Polls Act.
The Chairman of the Election Commission, Attorney-ar-Law Nimal Punchihewa, stated that the ECSL has already initiated the necessary preliminary work to hold the local government elections before March 20th next year.
The chairman stated that the date of the local government election will be decided after the certification of the 2022 voter list by October 31st.
He said that discussions with political parties in this regard will also be held.
Currently, the minister in charge has taken steps to extend the term of office of the local government bodies including local councils, urban councils and municipal councils by one year and postpone the elections until March next year.
