COLOMBO (News 1st); Opener Shevon Daniel hammered a blistering 75 runs as Sri Lanka Under 19s recorded a mammoth 128 run win against Ireland on Tuesday (11) in their opening warm-up match of the 2022 ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup held in the West Indies.
Ireland won the toss and elected to bowl with the match being cut short for 43 overs due to overnight rain.
Junior batting prodigy Shevon Daniel was fiery right from the start as he smashed boundaries all over the park with eight fours and a six.
Displaying some extraordinary sportsmanship Daniel retired at 75 runs to give valuable exposure to the rest of his teammates.
Lankan middle-order showed their prowess with the ball as they lifted the total upto 233 for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 43 overs.
Ranuda Somarathne topped the middle order scores with a valuable 33 runs.
Sri Lanka was in the driving seat from the start as the Irish Juniors were startled in their run chase with the bowling attack of the Lion cubs destroying the opponent's batting order by bundling them up for a paltry 105 runs in 31.4 overs.
Left-arm spinner Wanuja Sahan was the star of the bowling attack and picked up 3 wickets for just 5 runs.
Sri Lanka Under 19s will next play their final warm-up game against Uganda on Wednesday (12) at 7.30 pm, Sri Lankan time.
Sri Lanka will play in their group alongside Australia, hosts West Indies and Scotland at the upcoming ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
