COLOMBO (News 1st); The Samagi Jana Balavegaya on Friday (5) filed a Fundamental Rights application with the Supreme Court against the government take over of lands from Peliyagoda to Negombo, as well as from the Muthurajawela Wetlands.
MPs Harin Fernando & Kavinda Jayawardena were present in court to submit the applications.
"That take-over of these lands will seriously impact the lives of the people living there. This is not a simple take over but land grabs," said MP Jayawardena.
He said these lands, especially those in the Muthurajawela wetlands are to be taken over for an extension of the Colombo Port City and are to be handed over to international private entities.
He alleged that there is an attempt to release 300 acres of land to a Korean Company, and an agreement for this project valued at $500 Mn was signed with the Korean Ambassador.
MP Harin Fernando said that on the 8th of November, a massive protest will take place with the participation of the clergy to force the government to take a step back and abandon these attempts.
