COLOMBO (News 1st); The complaint lodged by teachers and parents with the Mawanella Police against the Deputy Chairman of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha for crashing their protest held near Mederigama Maha Vidyalaya yesterday (03), was taken up today (04).

Accordingly, a group of teachers including the principal of Mederigama Maha Vidyalaya as well as the Deputy Chairman of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha K.G. Piyatissa visited the Mawanella Police today.

The Deputy Chairman of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha, K. G. Piyatissa speaking to the media expressed his disappointment in the conduct of teachers at the protest and said that he visited the protest at the request of teachers and the principal of the school and that he has a duty to do so as a public servant.

He further alleged that the teachers have misled the parents, stating that a cleaning campaign will take place at the school, and instead held a protest at the school.

Stating that he never entered the school premises to dispel the protest, the Mawanella PS member stated that the Government also paid the salary of the teachers for one and half years despite the teachers doing nothing.

Meanwhile, a parent who took part in the protest stated that they visited the school not only seeking a solution for the teachers' salary anomaly issue, but also due to a number of serious problems in providing education to children.

The parent further stated that the PS member forcibly removed a parent from the school premises.

Moreover, a teacher at the Mederigama College, Lalinda Seneviratne said that the entire situation created a very stressful and unsuitable environment for teaching, and 28 staff members handed a letter to the Zonal Education Office seeking transfers.
