100 containers with rice unsafe to eat, detected at the Port

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan authorities have detected approximately 100 freight containers with rice unsuitable for human consumption at the Colombo Harbour.

A Senior Official at the Health Ministry told News 1st that 40 freight containers were subject to an inspection by the Food Control Unit of the Health Ministry.

The Government Analysts Department has reported that the consignment of rice was unsuitable for human consumption.

It was also revealed that nine other freight containers were released from the port and moved to a storage facility in Wattala, where insects were removed from the rice stocks.

The Senior Health Ministry official told News 1st that the consignment of unsuitable rice was imported to Sri Lanka from Pakistan in 2019.
