COLOMBO (News 1st): An increase in first-degree burn injuries has been noted due to the present COVID-19 situation, said Dr. Sathis Wijemanne, a Consultant Plastic, and Aesthetic Surgeon.

Dr. Wijemanne said that an increase in burns due to hot liquids, especially water has been noted during the past several weeks, as many have been instructed to inhale steam to prevent themselves from being infected with COVID-19.

" I don't think anyone approves of this. It has a symptomatic relief and I don't think it has been proven to prevent anyone from contracting COVID-19. But it brings relief for persons who have colds" He said.

The doctor reiterated that it is important for the public to be cautious about themselves during steam inhalation.
