Sajith berates government on trying to downplay COVID-19

COLOMBO (News 1st) Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa voiced serious concern over statements made by ruling party members not to take COVID-19 seriously, at a time the daily death toll exceeds 200, confirming the predictions of medical experts.

Sajith Premadasa said in a statement issued today that the country has lost more than 8000 lives, more than double the number of deaths in China since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Leader of the Opposition points out that the government has shied away from its responsibility to safeguard the lives of the people after the closure of the country and that the prices of essential commodities have risen to levels unbearable.

Sajith Premadasa said as per the present situation in the country, one will not be able to buy a kilogram of sugar even he or she sells 05 kilograms of rice.

Sajith Premadasa requests the government to guarantee the right to life of the citizens.
