COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Medical Association on Monday (16) said according to Health Ministry records 24,000 COVID-19 cases and 918 fatalities were reported last week.
Dr. Padma Gunaratne, the Chairperson of the SLMA told reporters that when the Health Ministry data is available, the number of COVID-19 cases in society is three times that figure.
She went on to note that the Delta variant of COVID-19 is spreading fast in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Gunaratne said the COVID number for last week is a 34% increase compared to the number reported in the previous week.
She said the number of fatalities for last week is a 60% increase compared to the previous week.
'We can understand what kind of situation we will have to face next week,' she said adding there is no doubt that COVID-19 has spread into the community.
She warned that the people must take all necessary measures to ensure that they do not contract COVID-19 as hospital facilities are already at full capacity.
