(VIDEO) Student Activists and several others arrested for their involvement in protests

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have arrested student activists for their involvement in the protest that took place close to the parliament on 03rd August. (Click here to visit video on Facebook : https://fb.watch/7ci7tqBZOz/ )

Police Spokesperson Senior DIG Ajith Rohana speaking to News 1st said the Convener of the Inter-University Student's Federation Wasantha Mudalige and the Chairman of the Sri Jayewardenepura University Students Federation Amila Sandeepa were arrested on Thursday (05) evening.

In addition, the drivers of three vans who transported people from various parts of the island to take part in the protests were also arrested by Sri Lanka Police, for breaching the travel restrictions.

'People were transported from Medirigiriya, Tissamaharama and Peradeniya,' said the Police Spokesperson adding that they had breached the provincial travel restriction.

The arrests were made by the Thalangama Police and they will be produced in court on Friday (06).

On the 03rd of August a protest took place close to the Parliament and the Maharagama Police Chief Inspector was seriously injured during a scuffle that broke-out during the protest.

Property damage was caused to the road after protestors set fire to a coffin during the protest, said the Senior Police Officer.

Several people were arrested on the 03rd of August for their involvement in the protest.

Further, another three people were arrested on Thursday (05) for engaging in a protest at the Zoysa Roundabout in Colombo.

They were arrested for violating the quarantine rules and regulations.
