Gampaha HC releases Shani Abeysekera after bail conditions were fulfilled

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Director of the Criminal Investigations Department Shani Abeysekera and Sub-Inspector Sugath Mohana Mendis fulfilled the bail conditions imposed by the Court of Appeal at the Gampaha High Court on Thursday (17).

Thereafter, Gampaha High Court Number 02 Judge S. Y. Mapa Bandara ordered the Prison Superintendents of the Welikada & Mahara Prisons to release Shani Abeysekera and Sugath Mohana Mendis.

On Wednesday (16), Court of Appeal Judges Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and Ratnapriya Gurusinghe ordered for the suspects to be released on a cash bail of Rs. 25,000/- each and two surety bails of Rs. 01 Million each.

The Court of Appeal also ordered the suspects to surrender their passports to the Gampaha High Court.

Accordingly, the brothers of Shani Abeysekera appeared at the Gampaha High Court as bondsman to complete the bail conditions while the wife and son of Sugath Mohana Mendis appeared as bondsman for the Sub-Inspector.

Shani Abeysekera and Sugath Mohana Mendis were barred from traveling overseas by the Gampaha High Court.

Shani Abeysekera and Sugath Mohana Mendis were arrested and remand for almost 10 months on the charge of fabricating false evidence against Ex-DIG Vaas Gunawardena and several other suspects.
