Ranjan Ramanayake ceased to be a member of parliament; Speaker

Colombo (News 1st); Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena told Parliament on Wednesday (07) that the Secretary-General of Parliament had informed the Chairman of the National Elections Commission that Ranjan Ramanayake ceased to be a member of parliament.

Accordingly, there is a vacant seat in Parliament with respect to the electoral district of Gampaha in terms of article 66 (d) of the constitution, he said. On the 12th of January, the Supreme Court found Ranjan Ramanayake guilty of contempt of court and sentenced him to 04 years in rigorous imprisonment.
