02 CID teams probing sword imports; AG tells CA

Colombo (News 1st); The Attorney General's Department on Wednesday (31) informed the Court of Appeal that two Special Police Teams led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Criminal Investigations Department are conducting investigations with regard to the importation of 6000 swords to Sri Lanka.

Senior State Counsel Dr. Avanti Perera appearing for the Attorney General informed the court that the Inspector General of Police had written to the AGs Department on the matter. This was revealed when the application filed by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo was called up at the Court of Appeal. The application notes that the swords were imported on the need of Mohamed Insaf, the suicide bomber responsible for the attack at the Taprobane restaurant at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel on the 21st of April 2019. Court of Appeal President Arjuna Obeysekera and Justice Mayadunne Corea ordered for the matter to be called up again on the 06th of May to determine if the matter will be carried forward.
