Colombo (News 1st); The proposed water project in Sinharaja is yet another mega-deal that would destroy the Sinharaja Rainforest and result in Hambantota losing access to water, alleged MP Patali Champika Ranawaka.

In a Facebook post, the MP said the real motive of the said the controversial project is to supply water to the China-funded Hambantota Industrial Zone. The MP said during the tenure of the Government of Good Governance the said project proposal was made via the Ministry of Southern Development, however, both the President and Prime Minister at the time, Maithripala Sirisena & Ranil Wickremesinghe, rejected the proposal. He said the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau, a local agency had carried out a feasibility study and according to the study it was revealed Hambantota would not receive a sufficient amount of water from the proposed project.
