COLOMBO (News 1st): The authorities are prepared to roll out the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it is available in the country, Dr. Deepa Gamage (Specialist) of the Epidemiology Unit at the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday (Jan. 06).
"However, being vaccinated against the virus is not the only answer to prevent the spread of the virus; people must continue to follow health guidelines," Dr. Gamage emphasized.
According to Dr. Gamage, there is no definite answer yet on whether or not the COVID-19 vaccines can ensure long-term immunity against the virus unlike other vaccines; and based on data at present, the vaccines only provide short-term immunity.
"Further, there is also no definite answer on whether or not being inoculated eliminates the risks of transmission, whereas more evidence is required to determine this concern," Dr. Gamage pointed out.
Therefore, Specialist - Dr. Deepa Gamage of the Epidemiology Unit emphasized that COVID-19 health practices cannot be set aside, after being inoculated.
